Math Fun !

Students practise adding in math. To practise they roll the dice for a body break, play games and solve word problems. We also think about the number of students absent and how many left in the class. After listening to a number story (real word and made up) students can determine if there will be adding or subtracting needed. We practice our basic fact to 12 daily during calendar time. Also, many of our students remember their doubles (2+2, 4+4, 6+6...) and know numbers that add up to 10  (names for 10 ....5+5, 8+2, 6+4, 9+1, 11-1)

Playing a math game. Look a Mathematician with a missing tooth!

When we went for a shape walk we couldn't believe all of the cylinders we saw!

Is it a square or a rectangle? Can you spot the triangles?

A diamond shape also known as a rhombus. This is a photo of the bench right outside our classroom.

On our shape walk we wanted to know if this shape painted on the concrete was a square. I said we'd have to measure to see if all side were the same length. How could we measure? We decided that we could use students as our unit.

The length of one side of the square was three students lying down end to end with a bit left over.  These students are watching the volunteers lie down on the sides of the squares. Look how long their shadows are!

It took 3 students and a bit left over to measure the length of the other side.
Yes!  The sides are the same length it must be a square.
