This Week! Dec 1st - Dec 5th

In class after recess, we are talking about different types of feelings. We talk about different situations that may cause different feelings (happy, mad, sad, scared, surprised, disgusted...). We bring those situations to life by "acting" them out with different student volunteers. Last week we talked about a situations that could happen and make us feel angry with another classmate. We modelled how to handle it using the words. We showed, by acting it out, how actions like taking things away or  pulling on someone's hoodie can cause the other person to get mad. We showed how to handle the feelings using words:
"Stop, I don't like it when you pull on my hoodie."

In the next weeks we will review these concepts and continue with other lessons to develop skills in empathy and learning respectful words to help with problem solving.
At home, try to model the development of assertive language with your child ("I" statements). Your child may have fun acting out situations (family or classmate scenarios) with you. What would you say? Is it respectful of the other person? Try taking turns acting it out.

Last week we had a lesson on: Choosing Books to Read

Choosing a book is kind of like choosing what shoes you wear. They've got to be a good fit for you.

I - PICK GUIDE TO CHOOSING BOOKS

I    I : I select a book and look it over inside and out
P   PURPOSE: why might I want to read it?
I     INTEREST:  does it interest me?
C  COMPREHEND: do I understand what I am reading?
K   KNOW: do I know most of the words?

Many of our students are interested in lego. So perhaps a lego story or a building guide might be interesting. We also talked about if we are choosing a book for bedtime we might like a story about people.

Would we wear our beach shoes for the Peace March? Absolutely not! Beach shoes are for a different purpose. We need a runner for the Peace March.

On Friday 31st, children are invited to wear a costume in the afternoon for the parade at school. We are encouraging the children to go home for lunch that day to change, if possible. To help celebrate in a healthy way, please let me know if you can bring a plate of fruit for this afternoon. We we also accept a dish of cookies or other sweet treat. I will accept the first two offers. Please do not send in other treats or candies. We will talk about healthy eating in our lunches the following week. This Week - Oct 20th - 23

Families,

It was great to meet with you last week during parent-teacher interviews. Please feel free to talk with me after-school, call for an appointment or send me an email to discuss your questions or concerns. Also don't hesitate to let me know if your child has something he/she might like to share with me or with the class.

Thanks for bringing boots to school. The indoor/outdoor shoe system really helps save our carpets and ensures that your child is comfortable and dry in school. Occasionally we do stay inside during lunch (due to rain) as it is a school wide decision. On those days I will be taking students for a break outside in the undercover area.

There are still a few families that have not handed in their Pumpkin Patch field trip forms. If you think you could be available to drive that would be great as it looks like we are in need of a few more drivers.

This week we will begin our preparations for the Remembrance Day Assembly. We have an art project and we are learning a new song. We have quite a colourful collection of owls living it up in our new bulletion board in the hallway. We will read and try to answer the questions raised last week about owls. I have included these questions at the bottom of this page.

This week - Oct 14 - 17

The rainy weather is upon us! Please make sure your son or daughter has clothing appropriate for outdoor play during light rainy weather.  I am expecting that students have both indoor and outdoor shoes for school. Indoor shoes should be runners that can also be worn for gym. Boots are necessary if your child would like to play in the grassy areas at recess and lunch. If you don't already have a baggie packed with a change of clothes, this week would be a great time to get organized. Thanks!

Planners and Back and Forth Folders - Grade one will have a planner and K's will have a Back and Forth Folder. I expect that this will be returned back to school every morning. Please use this as a way to communicate with me by putting a sticky note inside with the date on. Let me know if there is a planned absence or if a new person will be picking up your child.

Absences- Report absences to the office at 604-946-0321.
Lateness- If your child is late, he/she needs to check in at the office and then go through the school to walk to class.

Entry - Arrive on time for school at 8:40 am (first bell) and line up at the entrance to pod B.
Dismissal - Meet your child at the entrance to pod. Please do not pick up your child as we are packing up. If you know you will be leaving earlier than 3pm send a note with the time that you wish to pick up your child. Wednesdays pick up time is 1:45pm.

Healthy Foods - Please bring fruits and/or vegetables for recess snacks. Candies and puddings are strongly discouraged. Water is preferred over juice boxes. Please provide a variety of foods for your child's lunches and have a conversation with your child about his/her lunch options. Keep in mind students in this age group may require more food in their lunches after Christmas. There is a lot of growing going on!

Parent Volunteering - I have many opportunities for you to participate in our classroom. Please let me know by email if you are able to do any of the following:
help with our garden, read with children from 9-9:30 am, make playdough we need a new batch for October, Nov., Dec, etc.), be an extra set of hands during crafts, end of term clean up, or be a guest speaker. You are welcome to talk about a special interest,  share your profession, talk about how writing and reading are important in your life...

I am also looking for a class parent to help me with weekly emailing.

I am looking for the following donations: beginning reader books, puzzles, a set of play plastic animals, kitchen set (sink, cupboard) for kindergarten center play, and art materials. Please keep us in mind if you are cleaning out bookshelves, or if you visit thrift stores. Thanks!

Home Reading - We will start a home reading program in January. Our program will run on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We will need parent volunteers for the the months of Jan. - March. Parents will be needed to read with children from 9 - 9:30 am on Mon, Tues, Wednesdays (tentative schedule).

School Supplies - Most of us have already brought in all of our school supplies. If you know you need to get more supplies and require a supply list let me know by email.
Please bring runners for inside shoes. These will stay at school.
Please plan to bring rain jackets and rain boots for rainy days. We will go outside regardless of the weather.
When the winter weather comes send your child to school with a a warm jacket, hats and mittens.

Finally please bring a change of clothes labelled in a large baggie. A change of clothes (especially socks and pants) will be necessary after outdoor play in the afternoon in the case of bad weather.

I really appreciate your time and support in these matters. Let's make this a great year of learning and fun together!

Mrs. Bennett.

Words Their Way

Words Their Way (A Spelling and Word Study Program)

The following information should help you to know more about words their way homework. Along with Home Reading (HR) Students should be following the blog instructions for WthW homework nights. WthW homework should take 10-15 minutes.

Every week or so your child will be coming home with a new set of words for his/her weekly spelling. For some of the sorts your child will need your help.

The big emphasis is learning about spelling patterns or rules and oddballs (exceptions to the rule). The students practice sorting words into pattern groups, explaining the patterns, and looking for other words that fit the pattern. We are presently working on the long vowels.

At the end of the 4 day cycle there is a Dictation. I will save the Dictations (tests) and send them home for perusal. Home practice of incorrectly spelled words is recommended.

When you receive a new list of words in your child's planner we will be studying those words for approximately 5 days. Choose a different sort to do each day.

1. Sound and Sight Sort - sort the words while saying each word out loud
2. Speed Sort - sort as fast as you can
3. Mix and Fix - after sorting the words, parent swaps five words into different columns, child figures out what is mixed up and fixes it.
4. Hidden Sort  -
oral - parent calls out word, child points to which header the word should go under
written - parent sets up a page with headers at top and calls out word then child writes word in under the correct headers. (to add variety it might be more fun to use a whiteboard, felts, stickies...)
